HIGHLIGHTS OF THE SHANNON 28 MKII

  • Guinness World Record transatlantic single-hander design
  • Custom aft wheel steering
  • Mack Pack mainsail
  • Shannon Scutter Rig
  • Sleeps 4

The Shannon 28 is perhaps one of the only boats under 30 feet that was built in America for serious offshore sailing. Every conceivable item, from hull design to the layout of the galley dish locker was incorporated to produce the finest yacht possible. Dimensions of twenty eight feet on deck, twenty-three feet on the water, with a 9300 lb displacement, creates a phenomenal amount of useable area and seagoing qualities.

Since the Shannon 28 was designed for ocean sailing and comfortable coastal cruising in all wind and sea conditions, the interior layout and deck layout were critical. Seating comfort, steering ability, winch and electronic equipment locations, locker storage, space and safe footing on the decks were all considered during the design stages of the Shannon 28. The Shannon 28 was single-handed across the Atlantic twice by Rudder Magazine's editor and sailing book author, Monk Farnham, at age 72 and again at age 76 and is recorded in the Guiness World Record Book.

Shannon hand-built only 55 Shannon 28s beginning in 1978 and ceased production in 1986. Truman, one of the last 28s built, had only two owners and has been restored completely to its original beauty with modern modifications.

Comments on SHANNON 28 MK II Hull #42 Truman by Walt Schulz

I designed the Shannon 28 in 1978 and I now personally own Hull #47 (Truman) today. I found Truman in a boat yard in pretty tough shape, so I brought the boat back to the shop last winter and totally refurbished/ rehabbed the boat stem to stern. I wanted to see what it would take to make an older shannon like brand new. I changed the headsail configuration to a scutter rig which I designed and has been incorporated on every Shannon since 1995. The cutter rig with the basically unusable staysail on club boom was removed and the 75% working jib is on the end of the bowsprit with the 150 Genoa set aft so that the genoa tacks easily in front of the mast in light air (see scutter rig on 39's, 43's, 53's on our website).

I was never happy with either the tiller or the pedestal steering on the 28s because they infringed on moving around the cockpit, especially since I intended to single-hand the boat. Truman is now fitted with an entirely new Edson rack-and-pinion steering system with the wheel in a steering box located aft in the transom, freeing up the entire cockpit. I also installed a Simrad Auto Pilot with remote controls so that I could steer the boat from both the aft wheel and under the protection of the dodger. A new Raytheon radar and GPS plotter was also installed forward in the cockpit on the aft trunk bulkhead.

All plumbing pumps, exhaust systems, head/toilet, holding tank, Mac mainsail stack pack with full battens, new genoa, the hull has been re-gel coated, new dodger and bimini, and a long list of other upgrades were incorporated into Truman

Truman is a very unique vessel and requires absolutely nothing to complete a trans-Atlantic voyage.
